Hey all, I'm Allira, 25, from Brisbane, Australia. I'm your average female geek, with specific interest in fantasy, sci-fi and the paranormal. Also a bit of a gamer and like some anime/manga.

I'm currently working on a Business Diploma, and am employed part time at a sports store.

I'm a huge fan of all things Supernatural, Merlin, Sherlock, Avengers, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Fullmetal Alchemist, Star Wars, Legend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, and many, MANY other things.

I SURVIVED THE MISHAPOCALYPSE 2013

The TriForce symbol on the Gate of Time in Skyward Sword

I want to print this onto my iron-on sheets and put it on my jacket…

Sometimes I look at this stuff and I TOTALLY GEEK OUT
but usually I just end up really pissed off that they have these beautiful graphics in the games, not only depicting the Triforce but also the symbols of the individual Goddesses
BUT THE TRANSLATION STILL SAYS “GODS”
HHHHHHHHHHHH

Maybe it doesn’t translate directly into English? Perhaps “Gods” is gender-neutral or in fact even feminine in Hyrule?

That might work if it weren’t for the fact they’ve used the word “Goddess(es)” specifically in every other game - and assuming you’re translating from a fantasy language into English, any word they use to mean feminine deities would still translate into Goddess.
The anger here comes from the fact that part of the charm and awesomeness of the games for some of us was the use of goddesses instead of gods.  So for Nintendo to retcon it in Skyward Sword (supposedly the “origin story”) grates for those of us who really, really liked it the other way.
My assumption is actually that it was a shitty translation from Japanese, because honestly, there was more than one part where it seemed clear to me whoever their English editor was wasn’t paying attention.

The Japanese word for “God” is 神 or “Kami”. You’d be right in assuming it was a bad translation, as Kami in Japanese is gender neutral, and can be translated as “Goddess” as well. The most likely reason for the mistake is that, while Kami is neutral, there are more “male” gods than “female” in Japanese mythology. Really, that shouldn’t be an excuse on the editor’s part - existing game lore dammit!!
